I'm from China, so real food is always important in my daily diet. Freeze-dried food in my country did not sell well, and people who tried it said they would never buy it again. Usually, the closest food we bring into the wild that is similar to freeze-dried is instant noodles, which taste way better than the freeze-dried meal (we will also add extra when cooking the noodles). Some of my friends even carry an outdoor titanium rice cooker (specifically made with a small pot within a larger one and forms a mini steaming pot), and some even bring an outdoor mini pressure cooker (about 1L and weighing around 300g). So they can buy meat from the local farmer along the way and make stew during their hike. Yeah, the Jetboil style did not sell well here. Instead, most hikers choose the canister top and the remote canister, combined with the hiking pot sets. If we go car camping, we have some insane BTU stoves made by BRS and FireMaple that perform just like the kitchen stove.🤣 I tried it once on an expedition to Xinjiang Taklamakan Desert last year, and we had to use a proper wok to contain the insane BTU output. So, yeah, never Jetboil, never.😁

Nice thorough review. I have the older version with the one pocket brain and different sacrum grip on the hip belt. I found it super stable with 40lbs in her for a two nighter. The trail I was on was heavy Eastern Forest, narrow, wet, and very rooty/ undulating. My Baltoro 65 never caused me to forced me off my centre of gravity. Pleased cause third day hike out was in the rain and that trail was really slippy. I paid three hundred and something CDN for mine. Must have been seven years ago. That and my Gregory Massif are a pride and joy.

*Very bad and botched video full of mistakes.* My God... such a bad video and you call yourself "backpacking TV"?? So I'm going to correct you... *CAPACITY* The first thing is NOT your torso length. It's to know what capacity you need. For this, the best way is to put all of your gear into a trash bag and tight it. This will give you a good idea of what capacity you need. And, of course, the best is to bring your gear to the store and see which backpack fits your needs. Keep in mind that your load may vary depending on your adventure. *FITTING* *BEWARE Some backpack are adjustable, some not. That's one of the very imporant missing info from this botched video.* OK, you know that you need a 50L backpack (for example). Now you need a 50L backpack that fits YOUR body. Instead of all the bla bla in this video, you simply need to know that the torso length is not related to the overall size. Get a flexible measuring tape. Next lower your head, the protubering bone will be the C7 vertebrae. Then place both hands on your hips, thumbs facing each other in your back. The middle between them is the end of your vertebrae column. Now ask a friend to measure from the C7 to the end, and to make sure the measuring tape follows your body tight. BTW Mr. TV... This is C& and NOT C6. No need to be a doctor to know this since it's well known by those who really know what they're talking about. Just saying... Also, don't listen to this guy. *Not all manufacturers are using the same chart. So measure your torso length then check with the manufacturer's spec/chart.* You'll thank me for that one.. From there you need to decide if you go for an adjustable or not adjustable backpack. The decision is yours. An adjustable backpack will allow you to lend it to a friend (with a different torso length) or to have more people ready to buy it if you decide to upgrade in the future. If you go with an adjustable one, check the chart from the manufacturer and adjust it to your size. *WEARING THE BACKPACK* "50% of your weight going on your hips"... "distributed on your back" Really? I mean REALLY???? Totaly and absolutely false. First, the hip belt is to support 90 to 95% of the weight. Second, your back won't support any weight for the good reason the hip belt and shoulder straps are the only ones supporting weight. Physics 101. So, the hip belt must be tight on your hip bone with the padding hugging the top of your hip bone (not ON top). This so the weight is carried by your skeleton. If ON top, guess what? It'll compress your stomac and bowel, not good... Makes sense? The shoulder straps must be tight, but not too tight. You should be able to insert your hand flat between your shoulder and the strap. That's how you properly select, adjust and wear a backpack. Any experienced hiker, military, and mountaineer will tell you that. BTW, that was the right picture for the video. Thumbs down to the guy who made that crap.

Ponchos bandana buffs mosquito head net are everyday for me auxillary to my kit. I now carry an extra pair of light weight socks as well because can protect my hands in a pinch. I carry a small sewing kit which is something that people don't talk as much about in the backpacking outdoor community is preparing gear in the field plus you can modify things on the go if needed or desired. Oh and a woobie because they are awesome. Long sleeve shirts to button for extra warmth i could relate to a lot of your techniques I haven't really tried down much though. I love the fact that you said to hike with what you got in life we got to appreciate the things that we have and sometimes you find the gem and something that you already have and having an abundance mindset mindset laying in a mosquito net with loved ones in a makeshift shelter and thinking this is good enough its plenty its fine. I know youve moved on congrats by the way for your successes in the UA-cam and outdoor spaces. Thank you for the video!

As a nurse who's on her feet 12 hours a day 3-4 days a week, I have this to say, Don't skimp on your shoe comfort whether you choose sneakers or boots. Take care of your feet and they'll take care of you. Personally, I'm a boot girl, because I love to ensure that my ankles are protected. Stay safe out there! Great video and explanation!

My goodness! An entire video on footwear, and not a single mention of trail-runners? Is this 2008? How can we have such succinct, and nuanced discourse on outdoor footwear in this, the decade of mayhem? 😱 Super good points made! Always start with what you have, and upgrade gear as needed 👌🏻

As an outdoor retailer (these are my opinions, not those of my company), that was perhaps one of the best UA-camr takes on this issue. It varies greatly for all sorts of reasons. I’m a big guy, so I wear stiffer boots because if I go down that’s a problem for anyone I’m with. Others do well with trail runners. And I’ve sent the most dad-est of dad shoes (like if you know which shoe I’m talking about, lol) all over the world to great success.

Interesting review, the half of the points very subjective, it was pretty much my first backpack. very comfortable and light. became a part of my body while hiking. so is it beginner friendly backpack? It depends… with you it might be completely different experience, so the point of review is not really a point it just showing the product but in the end of the day it’s all up to you. Buy it use it and return if you don’t like it. You’re welcome.

Never had a footprint - if I were going to carry an *extra tarp* in addition to a tent, it'd be so I could set it up _overhead_ as additional rain cover or to enable setting up the tent in the rain without getting it full of water - and now I've *ditched the **_tent_* in favour of a tarp and a hammock. Never used a "waterproof" pack cover, because they don't even *_look_* effective against rain. Waterproof liners (even just a large plastic garbage bag) are vastly superior. Bought a solar panel thinking "cool, I can charge my batteries". Tested it at home on a nice sunny day and discovered I could charge a single 3000mAh 18650 battery in about a day's decent sunlight. I then compared the weight of the solar panel with that of an 18650 battery and determined that it would be lighter and less bulky to carry a few extra 18650 batteries (my mini powerbank, flashlight and headlamp all use 18650 batteries) - and I also wouldn't be at the mercy of how much sunlight is available. Deodorant's just silly when camping, never even considered there would be people who thought it necessary, or even a "good idea", anywhere outside "civilisation". Most deodorants are full of contaminants and chemical crap that you don't want washing off your body into a river or lake, anyway. Only extra clothes I carry are additional warm clothes for when the temperature drops of a night, extra pair of underwear and 2 pairs of socks. I'll change into warm dry clothes for the night, put on my damp hiking clothes the next day (hopefully they've dried a little overnight). Only thing in that lot I found remotely useful was the pocket tool - I've had to do repairs to my gear a couple of times where the pliers and screwdrivers came in handy. Even then, I wouldn't argue that it was an essential every time.

Neither. For the most versatile performance, it's tight-fighting, closed-toe sandals with wool socks. That's it. That is the best under any and all circumstances. I won't waste my time by going through all the ways sandals are better, because most people can't get past thinking sandals are uncool or whatever.

Always great to see a Mystery Ranch fan clue others in on the magic they make. I've used them for 20 years now and today, a year on from this video, I use the Radix line of lighter-weight backpacking packs they make. They run on average about a pound lighter and ten litres more in capacity for a given pack in the Bridger series. I own some of both and all are outstanding gear. Thanks Eric!

Plus they put it on sale a few times a year. Definitely worth it at the sale price if you're not out there too often. Also phones are waterproof now, so no worries about them getting wet.

Great video! Also, wear wool socks when hiking. I've slowly replaced all my socks with wool and love it

I'm going into Homelesness.. and all i got is a 50 pound backpack and tools on my belt. im currently in Massachusetts. but i want to go somewhere warm for winter.. some place like.. Texas.. or Florida.. or California. I dont care about trails because i was born in a very woodsy area. i have no tent either. just a sleeping bag. but my goal is to hopefully stumble my way into Acting and Stuntwork.
